Auschwitz has become a symbol of terror, genocide and the Holocaust first of all for Jews, Poles and Gypsies. During the Second World War the Nazis murdered more than 1 million people here. This mass murder took place in specially constructed gas chambers. The bodies were than burnt in crematoriums. Nowadays, Auschwitz houses the biggest cemetery in the world, along with a memorial and State museum. The horror of Auschwitz has been permanently inscribed in Europe's memory and has greatly influenced the development of our continent.
